Platform/Location/Time: 15 August - 30 September 2010

  • DC-8 based at Ft Lauderdale, FL
  • WB-57 based at Houston, TX
  • Global Hawk based at NASA Dryden

Participants (DC-8):

  • NASA Langley - LARGE
  • APR-2 - Stephen Durden (JPL) and staff
  • CAPS - Andy Heymsifeld (NCAR) and staff
  • DAWN - Michael Kavaya (NASA LaRC) and staff

  • LASE - Syed Ismail (NASA LaRC) and staff
  • MMS - Paul Bui (NASA Ames) and staff

Overall Goal:
To better understand how tropical storms form and develop into major hurricanes. In turn the data can be used to aid the hurricane forecast community in addressing shortcoming in the current state of hurricane research.

What we studied:
Repeated passes were made through tropical systems including hurricane Earl. We were looking to characterize sources of aerosols available to hurricanes.

We made measurements of Dust and Aerosols for:

  1. Dust Characterization for pre-hurricane Matthew
  2. Analyses of Bio-Materials
  3. New Particle formation in the Eye of Hurricane Earl
